Jupiter, FL (PRWEB) February 07, 2013
Get Fit for Scripps Day! will come to an exciting high point Feb. 10, 2013, when the inaugural Research Ride to benefit cancer research at Scripps Florida kicks off.
The Research Ride will bring together recreational bicyclists for a 19-mile cruise through Palm Beach Gardens, along the oceanfront condos in Juno Beach and up into the town of Jupiter. Waterfront Properties and Club Communities agents and staff members have joined the cause and have the largest team of riders to date.
Rob Thomson, managing partner of the licensed brokerage, has sponsored each rider by covering the $ 250 fundraising commitment. With 20 riders signed up, the amount donated comes to $ 5,000.
Your team is the largest group in the ride, which, by the way, I think is awesome, Research Ride Director Janet Angeletti said.
The Research Ride is one of several events unfolding between Feb. 9 and 14 and is part of the PGA National Womens Cancer Awareness Days charity initiative. Other activities include a 5K walk / run, spin sessions, yoga classes, a youth biathlon Splash & Dash, golf, tennis, croquet and table games.
The ride begins at 8 a.m. at the PGA National Health & Racquet Club. Bicyclists will arrive at 7:30 a.m. for check-in. Breakfast will be available, and T-shirts and goodie-filled bags will be handed out to participants. Committee members of the PGA National Womens Cancer Awareness Days will award prizes to those who raise the most money.
The committee, which is made up of 32 volunteers, was founded by Elaine Solomon and Barbara Sedransk. The first year, they had a golf tournament, and each year since then, new events have been added to the mix including the Research Ride.
The team from Waterfront Properties includes David Abernathy, Jessica Alden, Alison Archer, Beth Bourque, Natalya Daley, Laurie Elliott, Jerry Mitchell, Betsy Munson, Courtney Olander, Erik and Michelle Pariseleti, Carola Rathke, Matthew Steinhoff, Isabel Stephenson, Sarah Thomson and Karen Walsh, as well as their friends and family members.
The PGA National Womens Cancer Awareness Days brings together more than 750 participants whose support helps fund fellowships at Scripps Floridas Department of Cancer Biology.
We wanted to put the money directly into cancer research and felt that Scripps Florida, a not-for-profit organization, was doing the most exciting, intensive kinds of research that can make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and survivors…and theyre doing it right here, as members in our own community, Solomon said.
In 2012, a total of $ 160,000 was raised, which helped fund three fellowships.
To meet and visit with the funded scientists is thrilling and provides assurance all contributions are directly supporting research, Solomon said.
The Gardens Mall, near The Landmark condos for sale in Palm Beach Gardens, is Premiere Sponsor this year.
Scripps Florida is on Florida Atlantic Universitys Jupiter campus, adjacent to Abacoa. It is part of The Scripps Research Institute, a worldwide nonprofit organization focused on biomedical science.
